History

By Imperial Decree of 21 October 1811, the Hillegersberg and Rotteban district was split into the municipalities of Bergschenhoek and Hillegersberg. This marked the beginning of the municipality of Bergschenhoek.

In 1811, the municipality had 700 inhabitants, in 1870 it was 951, in 1890 it rose to 1131 and on 1 January 1937 the population was 2901. In the Fourth Memorandum on Spatial Planning Extra (VINEX, 1993), Bergschenhoek was designated as a growth municipality; the village grew from 6,000 inhabitants in the 1990s to over 17,000 inhabitants in 2006.
